 1. 1961 FREEDOM RIDERS

AN AWFUL LOT of American men and women have actively put THEIR lives on the line to fight for OURS. Shackle breakers, you could call them, making the style of this bracelet fitting.

WHO WERE THE FREEDOM RIDERS? This Bracelet pays tribute to Freedom Riders who insisted on non-violently sticking to their principles in spite of great opposition which they knew could come at the ultimate cost of violence. Riding interstate buses into the segregated southern United States chiefly in 1961, Freedom Riders were civil rights activists who challenged the NON-enforcement of the U. S. Supreme Court decisions which ruled that segregated public buses were unconstitutional.

Typically featuring the women, Riders and other activists who may be pictured on your bracelet include: Irene Morgan (11 years before Rosa Parks, she refused to give up her bus seat, and she wasn’t the first), Claudette Colvin (refused to give up her bus seat 8 months before Rosa Parks), Gloria Richardson, organizer Diane Nash, Hellen O'Neal McCray, Joan Trumphauer, Margaret Winonah Beamer Myers, Lula Mae White, Margaret Leonard, Catherine Burks Brooks, Judith Frieze, Ruby Doris Smith-Robinson, Helen Singleton, Gloria Booknight, Joan Pleune, Jorgia Siegel, Winonah Margaret Beamer, Patricia Elaine Bryant, Frances Wilson, Helen Dorothy, Claire O'Connor, Mimi Real, Ellen Ziskind, Carol Silver, and Kredelle Petway. Keep in mind these are just some of the women! There were many men alongside them.

I will choose 6 activists for your bracelet, UNLESS you send an EMAIL or CHAT with your Freedom Rider preferences

3. WELL-BEHAVED WOMEN

"For such a time as this."*

Maybe well-behaved women can make history. But these women -- Miss Mary Hamilton, Mrs. Rosa Parks, Mrs. Viola Liuzzo, Mrs. Harriet Tubman, Ms. Claudette Colvin, and Ms. Irene Morgan -- did make history and, to our benefit, they weren't always "well-behaved."  They stuck to their principles though they ruffled feathers in the process.

The bracelet holds 6 images. SEND A CHAT if you want 5 images + 1 personalization, and tell me what you'd like the personalization to be (initial, number, short quote, family or friend image, name, etc.) *Esther 4:14

4. ASIAN ACTIVISTS

Fred Korematsu, Yuri Kochiyama, Mahatma Gandhi, Grace Lee Boggs, Mary Harrison Lee. Fighters for pan-ethnic social justice and civil rights.

“Our children deserve to learn about the full breadth of the history of the United States and world,” said State Superintendent Dr. Michael Rice. “Some of history’s chapters are challenging, uncomfortable, or even searing—particularly those that deal with race, racism, xenophobia, and sexism—but our young people need to learn about all of history and to wrestle with the complexity of our history.” -This excerpt from an August 2022 press release on Asian American history (from Michigan.gov) tells you why this bracelet makes an important statement. Social justice, more pointedly, civil rights, is, as Viola Liuzzo put it, everybody's fight. America has needed voices from every sector to demand that the nation live up to its expressed creeds, and there is no maintenance of progress, and no moving forward, if we don't remember and learn from the example of those who've stetted up to speak up.

5. LGBTQIA COMMUNITY

Featured: James Baldwin, Nancy Cardenas, Bayard Rustin, Harvey Milk, Marsha P. Johnson, Frida Kahlo

Whom do you know who would feel validated by this statement ensemble?

6 .BLM

Thirty plus four thousand

And one-sixty-four...

Those who cry out

Are saying, "no more."

-Fury

Remembering and keeping worth alive beyond the "moment", beyond the movement. - Victims' names, on sand-colored stone backgrounds, are mounted, on low wood tiles and set in antique silver (looks like dark pewter) charm bracelet bezels. Names wrap around the bottom of each tile. And a quote from former slave and abolitionist Solomon Northrup is straddled across all six tiles:

"What is the color of the soul?"

I build these by hand and determine the order of the names. The numbers in my poem refer to the more than 4,000 men, women (yes), and children (horrid) recorded as lynched on U.S. soil since the early 1800s...the 30 present day names often represented on Say Their Names lists through 2019...and to 164 of the reported cases of people of color fatally shot by police in 2020 alone.

I will provide the personalization "NO MORE," but if you prefer "We remember you," "I will remember you," or "Not in vain..." SEND A CHAT to let me know.

8. DETROIT STREET ART

Got Eno?

There may only be a couple other people on the planet who apply internationally recognized, award-winning artist Eno Laget’s meticulous illustration technique to large scale painting, and perhaps only one other who does so for stencil work. A 6-image bracelet with his work is the perfect gift for graffiti and street art lovers. If you've never seen Eno Laget's multi-layered enamel paint stencil pochoir prints, take a peek at some of it via the links below. All figures represented (may include: Robocop, Aretha Franklin, Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, Grace Lee Bogs, Jordan "Tead" Vaughn, and Hazen Pingree) are strongly connected to Detroit, the city of Eno's passion and birth. All images are crops from larger pieces of work.

ARTHAUS:Detroit will select the images, unless you prefer to SEND A CHAT with your preferences from the list above (arthaus.detroit@gmail.com). Repurposed Detroit hardware might be included as a charm (artist choice, and hardware will vary).
